Our Mission

Magnolia Exotic Bird Sanctuary (MEBS) is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to the rescue and protection of unwanted, abused, neglected and abandoned companion parrots in the United States.

We provide shelter, housing, education and adoption services for a wide variety of parrot species. For some parrots, we are a life long sanctuary. We provide adoptions for the well socialized birds, emergency temporary housing for hurricane victims, fire disasters and personal disasters such as death, evictions and domestic abuse.

Parrot

the Challenges of Parrot Rescues & Sanctuaries

Parrots are long-lived (many living over 60 years). They outlive their owners and are the fourth most popular pet in the United States. Unfortunately, they are often bought in the pet market for their beauty and potential mimicking abilities without much understanding or concern for their very unique needs in captivity. Parrots are very intelligent, suffer grief, trauma, loneliness, and boredom, and when their needs are not met, they begin to pluck their feathers and hurt themselves, scream, bite, and even destroy their environment.

Ideally, all the parrots in our care would go to knowledgeable, loving families, but so many are not socialized and for a variety of reasons, cannot live in a home.

Our sanctuary is the end of the road for some of these beautiful, intelligent animals. Here they live out their lives with their own kind. Our oldest resident is Bob, a 57-year-old Amazon, for decades he was sold over and over again. We are his 11th home and his last home. He does not have to endure any more trauma caused by humans. Now, he is finally safe.

The demand for parrot relinquishment has exploded from the baby boomers that have either passed away, become ill, downsizing, tired of the challenges or can no longer afford to care for their pets. It is also common for people that initially think having a parrot will be lots of fun, quickly realize they are in over their heads and are desperate to get rid of their bird.

Unfortunately, we have to turn down birds every day. We are limited in space, money and manpower and are busting at the seams. It is nearly impossible for us to keep up with the demand.

Currently, we have 150+ parrots in our care.

We do our very best, saving one parrot at a time.

We rely on donations to cover the cost of caring for our 150+ parrots. Your donations go directly towards food, housing, and veterinary care for current and future residents of M.E.B.S.
